Trojans blanked in state regional finals

ONEONTA – It was nearly an exact replica of last week’s sectional title win for Greene, only this time, it was the opponent that set the early pace.
Williamsville North scored just a minute into play, added a second goal in the 22nd minute, and finished off the Trojans in the New York State Class A regional filed hockey finals by that same 2-0 count, Saturday evening at Oneonta State.
It was just eight days earlier that Greene jumped out to a one-goal lead over Whitney Point in the first 51 seconds of play en route to a 3-0 win. “(Williamsville North) is very good, and I don’t know if that first goal hurt us psychologically,” said
Greene head coach Sue Carlin. “The kids played well and had a good year, it's just tough to lose a game at this stage.”
It wasn’t as if Greene was not competitive, but it never generated consistent offense against a speedy Spartans club that was the first team to hold Greene without a goal. In fact, the Trojans had just two games where it had one-goal games. “We played better in the second half, but we definitely didn’t play our best,” Carlin said. “We made an adjustment at halftime and tried to put more pressure on the ball. Someone would stop us our come from behind to help out and make a tackle.”
Shots came at a premium for both clubs with the winning Spartans finishing with just four – two of those finding the cage – and Greene mustering a season-low three shots.
Shantae Miller had the opening tally after a penalty corner. Allie Ahern took the initial pass, and found a wide-open Miller. The duo switched roles on the insurance tally with 8:05 to play. Miller’s pass into the penalty circle found Ahern’s stick, who blasted the ball past Trojans keeper Devyn Staley. “That was a good play,” Carlin said of the second goal. “The first goal, we just didn't pick (Miller) up.”
Greene finishes the season 17-3.
