Jail renovation costs improved
NORWICH – Tthe Chenango County Board of Supervisors committed to a $2.7 million renovation project of the former jail and safety buildings into county offices Tuesday.
The building located on West Park Place in the City of Norwich will be separated into two structures. Demolition of the century-old jail cells, along with exterior and interior renovations are planned.
The scope of the project began with only demolition and exterior work estimated to cost about $2.3 million. However, the Department of Social Services agreed to partner with the county for $400,000 worth of interior renovations. DSS will later reimburse the county for the amount.
Finance Committee Vice Chairman Dennis Brown, D-Pharsalia, said he predicted that the final cost for all renovations would be lower.
Following a question from Supervisor Jerry L. Kreiner, R-Plymouth, Chenango County Treasurer William E. Evans said the county’s surplus currently totals between $9 and $10 million. Surplus will be used to afford the project.
Peter C. Flanagan, D-Preston, asked whether surplus would be used to afford the estimated $5 million Cell III development at the county’s landfill in Pharsalia. Evans said it would be.
County supervisors yesterday also approved a reimburseable capital project expenditure of $51,600 for the office chambers of Sixth Judicial District New York Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Garry.
The Justice’s chambers are currently under construction on the second floor of the Hayes Office Supply building on East Main Street in Norwich. Chenango County will lease the new space for her at $13,200 annually.
Plymouth’s Kreiner voted against the resolution.
