Fire ravages city home

NORWICH – An electrical fire raged through a Norwich house along Steer Lane Thursday afternoon, starting in the basement and traveling all the way to the attic.
No one was injured in the blaze that destroyed the home of Daryl and Bobbi Jo Woodbeck.
The City of Norwich and North Norwich fire departments responded to the emergency call placed at approximately 12:06 p.m. Thursday, and left more than two and a half hours later.
“We determined the fire was electrical in nature from a pinched extension cord that eventually built up heat,” said Norwich Fire Captain Mike Ford.
The official cause of the fire was determined to be electrical, due to the degradation of the insulation surrounding an extension cord operating a desk fan.
Ford said that Mrs. Woodbeck was home with her children at the time the fire began. “She told us she heard a popping noise coming from the basement door and when she approached, she noticed an orange glow. She took her kids and went over to the neighbor’s house,” said Ford. The fire department determined the exact point of ignition was the basement door repeatedly opening and closing over the extension cord.
“The smoke could be seen from the station by the time crews pulled out,” said Norwich Fire Chief Joseph Angelino.
Firefighters had to break several windows and cut holes in the roof to stop the blaze that had spread into the attic from the basement. Several other parts of the house were severely damaged.
Investigators said the home suffered from extensive smoke, water and heat damage, but could be restored if the entire house was “gutted.”
The Red Cross helped the victims to arrange temporary shelter.
