Arts Council presents "Babes in Toyland"

NORWICH – The Chenango County Council of the Arts, Norwich, NY will present Victor Herbert’s “Babes in Toyland” at the Martin W. Kappel Theater on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 5 p.m.
Set at the turn of the twentieth century, Victor Herbert’s timeless musical classic, Babes In Toyland, weaves fantasy and reality for the entire family in an exploration of generations at odds.
We catch up with Alan and Jane, a young brother and sister who, feeling misunderstood and disciplined too harshly, have run away from home. As the musical opens, we join them in Toyland, a beguiling world of walking, talking toys. The kindly Toymaker, so worldly and wise, reminds the children that they now inhabit a fantasy world. Melodrama takes hold in the form of Pinkerton, a detective hired by the children’s parents to return them home. But, Pinkerton has other plans as he wants the children’s help stealing the Toymaker’s plans for mass produced soldiers. The lessons of love and respect are rediscovered as we follow the children’s adventures in Toyland.
Written by Alice Hammerstein Mathias and William Mount-Burke, this production of the time-honored holiday musical includes the famous “Toyland, Toyland,” “March Of The Toys” and additional songs from other Victor Herbert operettas. The new lyrics are by Ms. Mathias.
Troupe America came on the national touring circuit in 1987 with a “bus and truck” production of the musical The 1940’s Radio and a new holiday production of Mr. Pickwick’s Christmas. Since then, there have been tours of A Child’s Christmas In Wales, The Gifts Of The Magi – co-produced with the Lamb’s Theatre of New York – Forbidden Broadway, Driving Miss Daisy and Steel Magnolias – co-produced with Big League Theatricals, and Troupe America’s own national tours of On Golden Pond, Babes In Toyland, Pump Boys And Dinettes, Ain’t Misbehavin’, The Odd Couple, Hank Williams: Lost Highway, Moon Over Buffalo, The Sunshine Boys, Stephen King’s Ghost Stories and Same Time Next Year.
This performance of “Babes in Toyland” is sponsored by Kerry Bio Science, with additional funding provided by the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
Tickets range in price from $14.50 to $22, with discounts for students, seniors and members of the Arts Council. For this performance only, the Arts Council is offering a special family rate of $50 for 2 adults and 3 children. Each additional child in the group will be $7.
Tickets are available by calling 336-ARTS (2787) or online at www.chenangoarts.org.
“Babes in Toyland” is the 3rd performance in the Arts Council’s 2007/08 performance series. Upcoming performances include Ceili Rain on Dec. 14, Eileen Ivers on Feb. 29, and Rick Benjamin’s Paragon Orchestra with the film classic “The Mark of Zorro” on April 27.
