HUnting preserve opens in New Berlin

NEW BERLIN – Hunting is a widely-practiced sport in much of upstate New York, but few New Yorkers can say that they’ve stood just a few feet away from a giant Russian boar and come out the winner.
That’s exactly what a 14-year-old boy had the opportunity to do recently when he visited the new Trophy Ridge Hunting Preserve in the Town of New Berlin.
In July, brothers Joe and Marty Warren achieved a lifelong dream when they opened the preserve. “It was something we wanted to do for years,” Marty said. The brothers were able to make their dream a reality when their parents decided to get out of the farming business in 2006. “We had the chance to utilize the land,” Marty said. With the help of their parents, Joe and Marty were able to convert the hundreds of acres of land into a hunting preserve.
For over a year, the brothers worked to get the preserve ready. With the help of family and friends, they walked the land several times, pushing all of the regular deer off of the land. They erected a fence and after getting approval from the state, they began introducing Russian boars and Fallow deer to the environment.
After opening the preserve, Joe and Marty decided to hold an event that they hope will become an annual tradition. They held a raffle, and the lucky winner had the opportunity to attend a complimentary youth hunt. The winner of the raffle was 14-year-old Corin Todd of Otego. Although Todd said he had been shooting guns and bows with his father for years, he was excited to get the opportunity to hunt a wild boar.
“It was his first time hunting a boar, and he really enjoyed himself,” Marty explained. Both Marty and Joe were glad they could give Todd an opportunity he would not have seen otherwise.
Joe explained that he hopes the youth hunt will be an annual tradition. “This year was a Russian boar, next year it will be a Fallow deer,” he said, explaining that they will rotate the game for the youth hunt each year.
Trophy Ridge Hunting Preserve is open year-round. Prices vary depending on the specifics of what a hunter is looking for, but no licenses are required. Wild boar hunts are held all seasons and Fallow deer hunts take place from Sept. 1 through April 14. A pheasant hunt is also available, beginning in September. The brothers plan on adding more animals to the mix as they continue.
For more information about the preserve, or to get an idea of pricing, call Joe at 859-2350 or Marty at 334-5241. Trophy Ridge Hunting Preserve is located at 208 Warren Road in New Berlin. Marty encourages anyone interested in the preserve to stop by, take a look and see what they have to offer.
