Norwich gears up for holidays with 13thAnnual Holiday Parade of Lights

NORWICH – On Saturday, Norwich will hold its kick off to the local holiday shopping season with the 13th Annual Christmas to Remember Holiday Parade of Lights.
A record number of people turned out for the parade last year, with between 4,000 to 5,000 in attendance, according to Parade Coordinator Linda Green. “We’re hoping for the same turnout this year. You won’t be disappointed,” Green said.
This year’s parade, stepping off at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow, will feature more than 52 units, including over 16 floats and eight fire department entries. In addition to the floats and fire companies, the parade will feature marching bands, including a Scottish Pipe Band, and a variety of vehicles, including ATVs carrying members of the Sherburne Wheelers, numerous motorcycles, many carrying members of the American Legion, and a 1930 Model A Doodlebug.
This year’s parade will also include a number of equine units. There will be horses with riders, horses pulling carriages and Shetland ponies pulling pony carts. In addition, the Widing Hill Percherons will be on hand again this year.
According to Green, the highlight of the parade is always Santa Claus. In the past, Santa has come into town on a Hook and Ladder truck, a steamer and on several other unique contraptions. Although Green would not give away this year’s surprise, she said that, “This year Santa will be arriving in style in a very unusual way.”
A raffle will be held following the parade, during which four children’s bicycles will be given away. In order to win, interested parties must sign up behind the judges’ stand, located next to Skillin’s Jewelers, between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. The drawing will be held at the end of the parade, and the winner must be present to qualify.
While four lucky children will have the chance to leave the parade with a new toy, people will also have the opportunity to drop off toys for less fortunate children in our community. Toys for Tots will have a collection vehicle in the parade this year. Anyone interested in donating a toy to a less fortunate child in the community should bring a new, unwrapped toy to the parade. The toys will be collected as the collection vehicle makes its way down the parade route.
“The overall vision of all of the lights at night is an experience in itself to start the holiday season and put you in the spirit,” Green said.
Each year the parade acts as the kick off to the local holiday shopping season. Many local merchants will stay open until 9 p.m. to allow everyone to shop after the parade. Cafe Connection will offer free gift wrapping with a receipt from a down town merchant. The parade will begin at 6 p.m. traveling down Broad Street from Eaton Ave. to Fair Street.
