Greene to vote on $36M school project
GREENE – In December, voters in the Greene Central School District will have to decide on a $36 million building project.
“I’m just excited about the possibility of maintaining our great facilities. We are at a time in the funding stream where this is very advantageous for us. We have building aid, EXCEL aid and a building reserve, which combined result in no tax levy increase,” said Greene Superintendent Gary P. Smith.
Greene will bring the proposal up for vote from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 11 in the high school auditorium.
There will be two public informational meetings regarding the project on Tuesday, Nov. 27 and Tuesday, Dec. 4, both at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.
The cost of the $36.1 million project will be paid for by utilizing state-funded EXCEL building aid, capital reserves and debt services. Board members say the project can be completed with a zero increase in taxes.
Approximately 95 percent of the project will be paid for by state aid while the remaining five percent by the district’s reserves, said school officials.
The board approved the resolution for the capital improvement project Oct. 17. More than half of the funds being asked for – $19.6 million – will go to the middle-high school building. Another $10.3 million for the intermediate school building and $5.7 million for the primary school. There is also just under $500,000 to add on to the existing bus garage.
“The focus of the project will be to update our aging infrastructure. Most of our buildings are over 40 years old. We are starting to see waste lines and steam lines that are disintegrating. We are excited about the possibility of having geothermal heating and cooling at the middle-high school campus. As oil continues to rise, we think future taxpayers will appreciate the visionary steps taken by this Board of Education,” said the board and administrative team in a public announcement.
The project will replace heating and ventilation systems in all of the school buildings and replace or repair current sewer and water systems in and outside of the structures. Also, the measures will upgrade security and expand space for additional educational programs.
Absentee ballots can be obtained from the clerk of the board at 656-4161 at extension 224. There is a powerpoint presentation on the district’s website detailing the project at www.greenecsd.org.
