Oxford makes plans for holidays
OXFORD – The Oxford Holiday Committee has held two meetings making arrangements for this year’s Tree Lighting ceremony. The goal of this nonprofit committee is to encourage Oxford Village businesses to get ‘in the spirit’ of the season by “dressing” their establishments in their “holiday best,” and to decorate LaFayette Park’s Village Green for the holiday season. This has evolved into a spectacular “Festival of Lights”, which the Oxford community is very proud of.
Over the past couple of years, generous donations from the community have enabled the committee to purchase additional lighted sculptures, pre-lit garlands, replacement strings of lights (as are needed this year), wreaths and bows for all the Village light poles as well as a 12’ tall everlasting evergreen tree. The singing of, “Oh Tannenbaum” is the cue for the grand lighting of this tree, as well as the other sparkling displays.
Some topics of discussion covered were: getting fliers to the Oxford Primary school students for “Friday Folders”; distribution of posters (view or print PDF posters here: http://www.oxfordny.com/business/pon/index.php ); moving displays; Santa Claus coming to town to make an appearance (which has been confirmed!); community groups to bake more cookies due to the growing attendance each year; donation box distribution; a sound system; and musical entertainment.
Offering assistance, the Oxford Fire Department youth group, the Explorers, have volunteered to help with moving displays out of storage, the Oxford Lions Club will have a surprise to improve the sound system on the park, and the new music and arts venue, 6 On The Square, have offered to have their doors open for warming up and getting acquainted. If the weather is inclement, refreshments will be served inside.
On the subject of refreshments, John and Bonnie Knapp said that they will be back with their freshly roasted chestnuts. Regarding the home-made cookies, Boy and Girl Scouts, Eastern Star, and the Grange will be busy as usual baking many dozens, but more community groups may be getting involved this year. More hot cocoa, will be made by Joanie Bradley and Charlie McMullen, and more hot mulled cider, will be made by Steve and Sherry Behe. When/if cookies are left over, they’re brought to the soup kitchen at St. Paul’s church; however, last year there were no leftovers!
For the primary school children, the Recycled Holiday Ornament Contest has been brought back for a fourth annual event. Place winners will be announced by Mayor Stark at the Tree Lighting Ceremony.
The Holiday Committee, all local residents, volunteer their time and energy each year making plans, distributing fliers, purchasing and making new displays, and distributing fund raising cans around the Village. These cans, wrapped in colorful gift paper, have been placed on merchant counters. The community has always been very generous and supportive of the Holiday Committee’s efforts, dropping their spare change into the cans. These donations have made it possible every year for the Holiday Tree Lighting display to keep looking beautiful. The Oxford Holiday Committee is again counting on community support, and hopes you will give generously.
Anyone who would like to make a holiday decorating suggestion can contact any committee member, send in an email to Events@OxfordNY.com or visit the Discussion Board at www.OxfordNY.com and write it in there.
The annual “Holiday Tree Lighting on the Park” will be Sunday, Dec. 2, at 5 p.m.
