Oxford 63, Oneida 57
NORWICH – Norwich played from the front while Oxford played catch-up most of the way as each team advanced to the finals of the Tom Schwan Memorial Basketball Tournament Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
Norwich did not allow a B-G field goal until 12 minutes elapsed in the first half. The Tornado led by 15 at the break; however, NHS head coach Mark Abbott thought his team played even better in the second 16 minutes. “Our intensity was much better in the second half,” Abbott said. “We did a better job going to the boards and getting on the floor for loose balls.”
Patrick Coates erupted for 15 points in the second half to finish with a career-high 19 to lead Norwich. All 14 Norwich players saw time on the floor in the first half, and all 14 found the scoring column. “We have to rely on our depth and we can’t afford any letdowns,” Abbott said. “One through 14 have to be threats offensively and do their job defensively. We’re looking for a lot of games where we have multiple guys scoring seven to 12 points. If we can do that, we’ll be pretty successful.”
Chris McGinnis led B-G (0-3) with 13 points. The Bobcats face Oneida in the consolation game Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
In the opening varsity game, Oxford’s zone defense was burned in the first half by Oneida to the tune of a 35-19 deficit. The Blackhawks’ head coach, Tim Davis, knew a change was needed. “At halftime I told them we needed to change tempo and to get the lead under 10 entering the fourth quarter,” he said. “It didn’t take that long (to reduce the lead).”
Oxford hit three treys in the third stanza led by Scott Seiler’s eight points and Alex Champlin’s seven to move within one point, 48-47, entering the fourth.
Cory Seiler hit a baseline 12-footer after a Champlin pass for the lead with 4:45 to play, and Champlin extended the lead to four canning a three ball from the top of the key. Oxford struggled from the foul line in the first half making just 3-of-14 attempts, but made up for that hitting six free throws over the final 1:05. “We went to a full-court press and made them go faster than they wanted,” Davis said. “In the third quarter, we were just able to get into an offensive flow.”
Champlin led Oxford with 16 points, while Seiler and Tom Gould buried 14 apiece.

Garrett Porack led the comeback with 15 of his 17 points coming after halftime, and Sean Boise was the hero at the end. Boise picked up a steal with 14 seconds remaining, and the ball was knocked out of bounds. Boise then took an Ethan Sconzo bounce pass and connected on a layup at the final horn.
“To go on the road, be down 14 points in third, claw back to win with a defensive stop and execute on other end, that is a great way to start the season,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard. “We’re an inexperienced team, but we showed a lot of character.”
