AIM Fitness opens in North Plaza today

NORWICH – Just in time to help individuals get back into shape after all those holiday meals, a new fitness facility opened its doors today.
Aim Fitness is a state-of-the-art fitness facility, including extensive cardiovascular equipment, with a cardio deck containing 45 machines and equipped with multimedia technology, a large selection of weight resistance and circuit training machines, free weights and exercise classes, a fully knowledgeable and certified staff, juice bar consisting of 19 protein and vitamin drinks, steam rooms, privacy and on-site daycare for only an additional $1 per child, per hour to help target the perfect workout experience.
The building, which used to house Grand Union grocery store in Norwich’s North Plaza, consists of 18,000 square feet of nothing but exercise and fitness equipment. “We are one of two gyms in the state that has some of this equipment,” owner Eric Montalvo said as he explained he and partner Anthony Amendola have worked continuously for seven months to transform the building from the roof down. “We want to not only give people a workout, we want them to get the entire experience of the fitness center,” he said.
The center also has two group exercise rooms where Montalvo explained many types of exercise and instruction are planned to take place. He says currently, there are four instructors on staff, and they are looking for more. “All of our staff are knowledgeable, some need to get certified, but our goal is that everyone we hire is certified or has a background in this field,” said Montalvo. “We have brought in individuals from the local college that either have sports management or some kind of related background.”
The main portion of the building is set up to have cardiovascular and other machines on one side and free weights on the other. “There are 14,000 pounds of free weights in just one section,” said Montalvo. While looking over the “cardio deck” as Montalvo calls it, he explained the machines are equipped with 17-inch touch screens, USB ports for iPods and even a feature that will allow patrons to take their electronic workout information with them and bring it back to the machine later. “We really wanted to capture everybody,” said Montalvo. “This has been many people’s dream for a long time,” he said.
Montalvo also explained he wants the community to become involved, saying there are many aspects, such as physical therapy and other injury recovery goals, that can be accomplished at the facility.
Hours of operation will be from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
The fitness center will offer membership specials through the month of December including a $29.95 a month auto-debit membership plan with a one year contract. After December, individuals will be required to pay a one-time processing fee of $49.95 and pay $34.99 a month with the auto-debit, one year contact membership plan. A grand opening is also planned for early this month.
There is also a month-to-month plan for $49.95 with no contract, a daily cost of $10 and other discounts for seniors 65 and older, groups of 10 or more, families, military and law enforcement.
