SHERBURNE – Westhill withstood the strong guard play of UV’s Mason Wyman and Raffi Perry to win the Sherburne-Earlville tip-off tournament title Saturday.
Most Valuable Player Dan Ross scored 22 points for the Warriors, runners-up in last year’s final to Sherburne-Earlville.
Wyman poured in a career-high 24 points for UV, who trailed 20-7 after one period. “They hit all four of their threes in the first quarter, and we struggled to get back on defense,” said Storm coach Matt Osborne of the first quarter. “After the first quarter I thought it could be a blowout, but we stepped it up in the second quarter. We had our chances to cut it down to seven or five points in the third quarter, but just didn’t execute the plays.”
Perry added 12 points for UV before fouling out with 2 1/2 minutes to play in the fourth quarter.
Clinton hit seven three balls and erased S-E’s three-point lead early in the second quarter scoring the final 12 points of the stanza to win the consolation game.
The Marauders closed to within 42-40 with under five minutes to play in the fourth before the Warriors’ Lee Foxton hit 7-of-8 free throws to seal the victory. “We knew they liked to shoot the three ball and they did a lot of dribble penetration,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard. “They kicked the ball out, and we just didn’t rotate quick enough.”
Garrett Porack led the Marauders with 19 points and Sean Boise had 11. S-E plays at Hamilton Tuesday.
Unadilla Valley turned around a sluggish start to pull away from the host Marauders in Friday’s opening-round victory.
Down by as many as six points early in the game, UV took command of the game scoring the final 12 points of the first half. After an S-E hoop to begin the third quarter, the Storm scored 10 more points to open up a 34-19 lead.
Senior guards Wyman and Perry led UV with 16 and 15 points apiece. “I think we had some first-game jitters and weren’t as aggressive as we needed to be on offense and defense in the first quarter,” Osborne said. “We put on a couple different presses, and that seemed to rattle them.”
Darin Garcia added eight points, eight rebounds, and three steals in the win.
Porack led S-E with 10 points.
