SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville won for the second time in four games this season Thursday night, and both have come by the identical score.
Caleb Brown capped a season-best contest hitting the final basket of the game with 3:04 to play to unlock a tie game. Brown had 12 points and aided the effort of leading scorer Garrett Porack’s game-high 22 points.
S-E coach Kevin Vibbard singled out Brown for his offense and defense. “It wasn’t just his points, he had a great game on defense defending their best player (Viktor Selyuzhisky),” the S-E mentor said. “You can see his game maturing on the varsity level.”
Waterville jumped out a 11-2 lead in the opening four minutes of the game. The rest of the way, the Marauders’ defense became much stingier. “We challenged the kids to pick it up on the defensive end, and they responded,” Vibbard said.

CINCINNATUS – Senior Amber Wood set a new OV girls’ basketball scoring record leading her undermanned team to a double-overtime win at Cincinnatus Thursday.
Wood scored just four points in the first quarter and had 12 by halftime, but upped the ante significantly scoring 30 over the remaining portion of the game including six in the second overtime to finish with 42. It’s the highest single-game point total for any Chenango County area girl in at least 13 years. “She was driving to the basket and hitting some outside shots,” said Vikings coach Kevin Springer. “She did an outstanding job. I knew she had a lot of points, but not that many.”
The Vikings had just five players available for the game, and trailed by seven entering the fourth quarter. Senior Amanda Morse fouled out late in the fourth quarter leaving OV with just four players the rest of the way. “It did not look good at all for us,” Springer said. “We put some pressure on them and forced them into turnovers. And we kept battling to stay in the game.”
Erica Loomis chipped in with 14 points for the Vikings (2-1).

AFTON – Afton/B-G won its share of events, but with just seven healthy swimmers available, was unable to match the depth of Sherburne-Earlville Thursday.
Kurt Rogler, Shane Schnedian, Kevin Bullis and Steve Howe had multiple wins on the day for Afton, who dropped a 94-39 final to Chenango Valley the day before. “The guys that we had available did really well tonight,” said A/B-G coach Kevin Diefenbacher. “The guys are swimming 10 seconds faster at the start of this year over last year. We’ve had several best times just two meets into the season.”
Andrew Ashton had a pair of individual wins and three overall for the Marauders.
