G-MU passes building project

COPES CORNERS – Following months of anticipation, members of a local steering committee as well as school officials are relieved to know they can move ahead with building project plans.
Last Wednesday, 248 of the 294 votes counted in the Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton school district showed residents’ support for the $8.5 million building project.
Superintendent Douglas Exley says he was thrilled with the number of residents n the area who showed their support. “The numbers not only showed that the project makes sense to the public, but it also showed that the steering committee and everyone involved has been successful in meeting with the public and informing them about the project,” he said.
Exley explains now that voting is complete, the district will begin immediately on the project.
“The next six months is important. This is when the design and site work will begin,” said Exley.
Exley as well as other school officials will be working with Teitsch-Kent and Fay, the same architectural team used when the present school building was erected in 1992-93.
The total project proposal will include peaking the roof of the building and replacing the existing flat-style roofs on both the gymnasium and the auditorium. Additional parking in two separate locations will be put in place totaling 90 new spaces and a specialized parent pick-up/drop-off area will be built.
More energy-efficient lighting will be installed throughout the building, technology and communication upgrades will be put in place and the heating and ventilation system now running DOS or disk operating system will be upgraded to a Windows platform that engineers are now acquainted with. The playground equipment will be upgraded with a rubber matting system and the recreational playing fields will be expanded. Exley explains the school has a “pit” in back of the building and that will be filled in with excess material after excavation is done to aid the expansion of the fields.
Both the library in the elementary and secondary schools will be increased in size and a major focus on science will be put in place. The superintendent says there will be roughly a 1,400 square foot space where science labs will be put in for elementary students. Half of the space will be used by Kindergarten through third grade while the other half will be used by fourth through sixth graders.
Exley says the project addresses upgrading and improvements to better serve every student in the district, including space, safety and education instruction purposes.
