United Way passes last year's total, and there's still time to give
CHENANGO COUNTY – Winding down, Chenango United Way’s 2008 campaign has reached another milestone, beating last year’s total by at least $12,000 – and there are still a few days to go.
The Chenango United Way’s 2008 campaign will conclude on Dec. 31, but already the organization has raised $441,663 locally. That beats last year’s local total of $429,560. In addition the organization has received a total of $38,810 of donations designated to Chenango County from other United Ways. Chenango United Way Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco explained that many of the donations came from residents of Cincinnati, Ohio. She said this has been a regular occurrence since Procter & Gamble began transferring employees from Norwich to that area.
“The total amount we have raised so far is $480,473,” Monaco explained. “Which is $15,000 more than last year, so far.” As a personal goal, Monaco said, she would love for the organization to exceed the $500,000 mark, and while the campaign will end in a matter of days, she thought the organization would come close this year.
“We still have four employee campaigns out, and most have come in at or above last year’s amount. Anybody who still wants to give is welcome to do so,” Monaco said. “And second donations are welcome.”
While there is still a little bit of time, the campaign closes at noon on Monday, Dec. 31, and any donations received after that time must be allocated for programs in the 2009 year, so Monaco encouraged individuals to make sure their check was in on time if they wanted their money used for programs in 2008.
Campaign Director Victoria Mitchell took the time to thank all of the donors who have given to the campaign so far. Among the donors were students from three area schools – Oxford, Afton and Holy Family. Mitchell explained that students at the schools had contributed in the “Miles of Quarters” program. The program asks students to collect quarters to be donated to the United Way campaign. The students managed to raise $650 in quarters, which Mitchell explained is the highest amount raised in three years.
Once the United Way campaign has concluded, the organization will begin the task of allocating the funds they’ve received this year. This summer, United Way received nearly $900,000 in funding requests. Review panels have scored the funding applications, and once the total campaign revenues have been determined, they will begin the task of determining how much funding they can give each program.
