NBT makes significant donation to NYRI fight

NORWICH – Recognizing that the NYRI power-line project would irretrievably change the landscape of and bring economic hardship to Chenango and Madison counties, NBT Bank has donated $15,000 to support STOP NYRI, Inc. and its historic preservation research. NBT Bank President and Chief Executive Officer Martin Dietrich announced the donation at Commerce Chenango’s annual holiday gathering on December 4 at NBT Bank of Norwich. Eve Ann Shwartz, co-chair of STOP NYRI, accepted the donation on behalf of STOP NYRI.
Shwartz said: “I want to thank NBT Bank officials for studying the issues and potential impact and providing their support of STOP NYRI’s efforts.”
STOP NYRI will use NBT Bank’s donation primarily for historic studies of the proposed NYRI corridor and for a historian’s expert testimony. The results of this research will be submitted to the New York State Office of Historic Preservation and will be shared with public libraries and historical societies in Chenango and Madison counties. These historical designations are critical in establishing the detrimental effect the power lines would have on irreplaceable vistas, landmarks and buildings. The designations will also be used to oppose the NYRI project in upcoming New York State Public Service Commission hearings.
The balance of NBT Bank’s donation will be used to develop educational materials about power-line alternatives that would still fulfill our nation’s energy needs. These alternatives—which focus on safe and environmentally friendly power-generation methods near the centers of energy demand—include offshore wind farms, geothermal processes, river turbines, solar panels in urban areas, conservation and demand-side management techniques. STOP NYRI plans to create a variety of multimedia educational materials to use in outreach and lobbying efforts throughout the state, with an emphasis on the New York City metropolitan area.
Shwartz added: “NBT Bank’s contribution to STOP NYRI’s efforts has set a precedent for other businesses in Central New York. The bank is truly a champion of the areas it serves. Investing in the STOP NYRI cause is critical to preserving our communities, and this is one of the biggest challenges upstate New York residents have ever faced. If we are to be successful, we need financial support. Any additional contributions we receive will be used to pay for legal fees and lobbying work at both the state and federal levels. Together, we can stand in defense of our beautiful hills and valleys, our promising tourism economy and everyone who lives here.”
NBT Bank provides personal banking, asset management and business services. The independent community bank, headquartered in Norwich, has 82 offices in 19 upstate New York counties. NBT Bank’s parent company, NBT Bancorp Inc., had assets of $5.2 billion as of Sept. 30.
