Marauders win five titles at home tourney
Wrestling
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville crowned five champions at the S-E Classic, and 171-pounder Wheeler Brunschmid was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler Saturday night.
Brunschmid, a senior for the Marauders, pinned Vestal’s Ryan Cardon in 3:09. Cardon came into the finals with 17 wins, all by pinfall. Brunschmid dominated the match leading 9-1 before finishing the match.
Alec Sheddon (96), Tyi Franklin (103), and Greg DuVall (112) started the finals with title wins for S-E, and 285-pounder Chris Pike remained unbeaten winning a decision in the finals.
The Marauders placed third out of 11 teams behind first-place Vestal and runner-up Governeur. “Vestal is a pretty solid club and had all of their kids in the semifinals,” said S-E assistant coach Brian Hicks. “We wanted to finish in the top three like last year, and we were able to do that.”
The Marauders host Canastota Tuesday.

BAINBRIDGE – B-G got off to the best possible start rattling Harpursville with a full-court press, while knocking down nearly every shot in sight to win for the seventh straight time Saturday.
Mariah Schaeffer had nearly a game’s worth of points in the opening quarter. Schaffer canned three trifectas scoring 17 of his game-high 26 points in the first quarter leading her club to a 24-8 lead.
“That was a great start for us, and it just makes it so much easier when you make shots,” said B-G coach Bob Conway. “I thought they had a hard time with our press in the first quarter. They seemed to figure it out in the second quarter and we got a little tired, but it did its job and set the tone to give us the lead.”
Dani Conway was steady throughout the contest finishing with 20 points, 15 rebounds, and eight steals.

CONKLIN – Susquehanna Valley overcame Norwich’s size advantage underneath to win its third game of the season Friday at home.
The Sabers hit 48 percent of their shots, and put 34 points on the board in the first half to lead by 12. “Our goals were to score over 44 and hold the opponent to 34 or under,” said Norwich coach Krista Porter. “We accomplished one goal, but didn’t do a good job with the other.”
The Sabers pulled away in the third quarter stretching a 12-point haltime lead to 20. Lindsay Stento had seven in the stanza and Kat Banko six. “They did a good job breaking our press,” Porter said. “We weren’t aggressive enough. We forced some turnovers, but not enough to make a difference.”
Boyan Cox scored a season-high 15 points for Norwich (1-7), who host Johnson City tonight.

AFTON – Oxford avenged its first loss of the season and snapped a three-game losing streak with clutch play late in the fourth quarter.
Down to the Crimson Knights midway through the final period, Hollyann Branham scored two baskets to put Oxford (5-4) in front, and Alyshia Crawford canned a free throw for the final margin.
Oxford came into the game with offensive struggles averaging under 28 points a game during the losing streak. “We worked a lot on shooting and staying patient in our offense during the break,” said Oxford coach Brad Aldrich. “The main thing was to stay patient and get good shots. We figured the shots would start going in if we stayed patient.”
Haley Witchella led Oxford with 14 points.

GREENE – Greene remained unbeaten in Midstate Athletic Conference play holding Sidney to just 13 points through three quarters in Saturday night’s matchup.
Megan McDermott sparked a quick Trojans start scoring six of her 14 points to help her club to a 14-2 advantage. Sidney added just one more bucket by halftime and trailed by 14.
“We just played a zone defense in the first half and they were misfiring,” said Trojans coach Bill Case. “We held them to one shot, and I think we had almost every defensive rebound in the first half. That was a big key and getting out on the break a little bit.”
Lizzy Buhl added 11 rebounds for Greene, who play at Unadilla Valley Tuesday.

WINDSOR – Greene finished one-two in five events and swept the 100-yard breaststroke in a non-league victory over Windsor Saturday morning.
The Trojans won for the 15th straight time and had a record-breaking performance from Patrick Kelsey. Kelsey won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.99, the school’s first-ever sub-minute time in the backstroke. “The kids are not used to swimming on Saturday morning, and they were coming off an intense practice on Friday night,” said Greene coach Mike Platta. “I was happy they were able to dig down deep and pull out some great swims.”
George Flanagan had a pair of individual wins for the Trojans (6-0) taking the 200 individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke.
Greene hosts Cooperstown Friday.
