Tornado’s eight-game winning streak halted by Seton Catholic Central

Seton Catholic Central 51, Norwich 33
NORWICH – Seton Catholic Central looked nothing and playing nothing like a team that had lost five games in a row.
The Saints snapped that slump in a big way ending Norwich’s eight-game winning streak with a convincing victory over the Tornado (9-3) Tuesday.
Playing a brand of man-to-man defense that was better than any club Norwich had faced this season, the Saints contested every Norwich pass and every Norwich shot. Nothing was a sure thing, and the abundance of Tornado turnovers was more than head coach Mark Abbott would ever like to count. “That was the best halfcourt defense I’ve seen in a long time,” said Norwich coach Mark Abbott. “We’ve play some great defensive games, but I don’t think we’ve play that good. From a basketball perspective, it was impressive.”
Seton scored the first 12 points of the second quarter to unlock a 9-9 tie. Steve Armstrong started the salvo with the first four points, and Matt Meier’s pull-up jumper at 4:16 made it 21-9.
The Saints continued to grow their lead in the second half, and led 42-20 early in the fourth quarter after a Chris Furner basket and Pat Matthews three ball in the left corner.
“They had lost five games in a row, but those losses were to five really good teams,” Abbott. “I tried to tell the players that Seton would play us harder than anyone we have faced all year. Saying and doing are different things. They just took us out of anything we wanted to do on offense.”
Furner scored 12 points to lead the Saints.
David Carson had eight points for the Tornado (9-3) who play at Windsor Friday. “It’s been a long time since we have lost, but it was just one game,” Abbott said. “We need to learn from it and get better.”
In the junior varsity matchup that featured two unbeaten clubs, Norwich extended its perfect record with a 56-54 win. Derek Hughes led NHS with 18 points and Richie Bonney had 10.
