NORWICH – One of the first actions taken by the Chenango County Board of Supervisors this year was to authorize the purchase of road construction equipment that will be shared among the 21 townships.

Sen. Thomas Libous promised the county $225,000 in New York State Department of Transportation funds during a campaign stop at the Chenango County highway garage in November of 2006. Members of the county’s Public Works Committee and the Chenango County Town Highway Superintendents Association worked together in order to design a plan for sharing the equipment. A mower boom tractor, self-propelled sweeper, tag behind sweeper, rubber tire roller and a power washer system are to be purchased and available to highway department in the spring, DPW Director Randy Gibbon said.

The resolution passed with only Town of Plymouth Supervisor Jerry L. Kreiner voting against the measure. Kreiner and other members of the Public Works Committee repeatedly questioned issues regarding the county’s liability for the shared equipment.

County legislators also signed an agreement with the Chenango County Area Corporation for $74,250. The Area Corporation is designed to promote economic welfare and encourage and support commerce and industry in the county.
