Greene High School junior killed in weekend crash
COVENTRY – A 17-year-old junior from the Greene Central School District was pronounced dead at the scene early Sunday morning following a one-car crash.
Kyle T. Petkash, 17, Coventry, was killed when the vehicle he was driving, a Chrysler Concord, left the roadway Sunday morning.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded to the accident along Spisak Road in the Town of Coventry at 4:20 a.m. and the Chenango County Medical Examiner’s Office pronounced Petkash dead at the scene.
“He apparently lost control of his car while negotiating a curve,” said Lt. James E. Lloyd of the Sheriff’s Office.
After exiting the road, Petkash’s car struck a tree, then rolled over before striking several other trees, completely destroying the car.
“He was just driving too fast,” said Lloyd.
The Sheriff released a statement Sunday declaring the likely cause of the accident as unsafe speeds for road conditions.
Lloyd reported that Petkash was wearing his seat belt at the time. Deputies will return to the scene Monday to finish their accident reconstruction analysis, said Lloyd. “We do a full investigation every time a life is lost,” he said.
The Greene High School’s crisis response team will meet at 9:30 a.m. and decided how to offer counseling to students. Classes will not resume until Tuesday due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
