Libous, Lopez announce $150,000 grant for Bainbridge
BAINBRIDGE – Senator Tom Libous (R,C,I – Binghamton) and Assemblyman Pete Lopez (R,C,I – Schoharie) today announced that they have secured state funding for the Village of Bainbridge. The Restore NY grant program has awarded the Village of Bainbridge a $150,000 grant to be used in the clean up of an area currently occupied by structures that have been vacant for many years, hindering future economic progress.
“It’s important that we continue to create new opportunities for communities like Bainbridge,” said Senator Libous. “Restoring vacant property and developing vacant land is a great start to a larger economic boost for Chenango County. Like our ‘Upstate Now’ plan outlines, it is crucial that we continue to lower costs for small business and find new ways to reduce taxes for everyone.”
The Village of Bainbridge project involves the demolition of a 22,000 sq. ft. deteriorated vacant manufacturing building, as well as the renovation of a 10,000 sq. ft. vacant building on the same site (5.4 acres). The activity will allow Bainbridge to market the site to prospective businesses. Currently there are two potential clients that are looking to build and occupy the space.
“I am especially proud of the community for taking the initiative to apply for Restore NY grants, and then to show the state just how vital state assistance would be to their economic future,” Assemblyman Lopez stated. “There is no doubt that this grant will help strengthen the economic opportunities for the people of Bainbridge.”
The Restore NY is a program designed to encourage economic development and neighborhood growth by providing municipalities with financial assistance for revitalization of commercial and residential properties. For the 2007 round of requests, up to $100 million was available for distribution to various municipalities in accordance with need and importance.
