City View trailer park getting cleaned up
NORWICH – Neighbors along Crandall Avenue say after years of struggling to do something about the trailer park that has plagued the neighborhood with the stench of sewage, garbage and rat infestations, the eyesore is finally starting to look better.
City View Trailer Park, which neighbors say started causing problems over a decade ago, rapidly worsened roughly three years ago as water and sewer problems led to a court-ordered eviction of the park’s tenants. The tenants residing at the park were given 30 days to remove themselves from the area. Following the eviction, the park stood vacant, despite the reports that one family had returned and was again given notice to leave.
The park, which supported eight residential mobile homes, remained shut down, however the problem intensified due to the fact the trailers were left in disarray and looked as though tenants simply walked away and left their homes “as is.”
Neighbor Tim Howe said the park is a disgrace to look at and serious problems still occurred well after residents left.
Removal of the trailers has been an issue in the past, although Town Supervisor David Law said there was nothing he could do until the property went up for back taxes. The taxes, which have been in arrears for well over three years, total more than $12,000 and the park is expected to go up for sale this spring.
Now, anyone driving down Crandall Avenue can see the difference as six of the eight trailers have been taken down by a local contractor.
Howe said contractor Tim Prosser was given permission by park owner Steven Key to remove the two trailers owned by the park and two other trailer owners signed over permission to have theirs dismantled and cleaned up.
Howe says the park is gradually getting better. “Hopefully the rest will be removed as well. The one hanging over my property is buckling even more and I don’t know how long it will be until it goes,” said Howe.
The remaining trailers are privately owned and the homeowners did not sign over permission to have the trailers removed yet.
“We will just have to wait and see now,” said Howe.
