Oxford fisherman’s charter business offers anglers trophy-sized memories

OXFORD – If the photos are any indication of success, ‘trophy-sized fish just waiting to be snagged’ should be on the banner of an Oxford businessman’s newly created website.
Captain James G. Jared’s Shade Tree Charters went online in January, and the colorful photos included depict many proud anglers showing off extremely large trout, salmon, steelhead, small mouth bass and muskie. The latter fish - which can be in excess of 50 to 60 inches long - are only caught and released in order to preserve the species.
“People only keep a legal-sized muskie if it’s their personal best or a possible record,” Jared, who started his chartering business five years ago, said. “And, believe me, there’s a lot of hooping and hollering on board when that happens.”
Captain Jared is a USCG licensed and fully-insured boat pilot with 20 years of big water fishing experience. Originally from Cookeville, Tenn., he moved to Chenango County in 1969 and was an communications technician with Frontier in Norwich for 28 years. A past member of the Chenango County SPCA board, he and his wife, Cilla, live on a lively 28-acre gentleman’s farm with an ever-growing and changing menagerie of dogs and cats.
Fishing enthusiasts may charter Jared’s fully-equipped boat, The Christie II, for full day outings on Lake Ontario beginning in April and on the St. Lawrence River from October through December. The 28-foot boat has a 10 1/2 foot beam and can hold up to six people. Families are welcome.
“Fishing is a fabulously fun family outing,” Jared said. “I love to take kids fishing. They appreciate any fish they catch.”
The Christie II is designed primarily as a near-shore saltwater boat with a bow-up design, making it very dry and stable in rough water. It is complete with a stand-up head, a galley, plenty of room to store belongings, SIRIUS satellite radio, cell phone and two VHF ship-to-shore radios.
Tackle and safety equipment are on board for youths and adults.
Jared’s boat can be found harbored at Anchor Resort and Marina on Little Sodus Bay in Fair Haven. Located 15 miles west of Oswego, Fair Haven is a widely recognized fishing hole known as the brown trout capital of Lake Ontario. In July, the chinook salmon show up in numbers there, too, followed by plentiful steelhead through September. In October, The Christie II sets off to Clayton on the St. Lawrence River for muskie fishing.
Jared said partial day outings are subject to discussion and site seeing trips are also available on the St. Lawrence River. He and his steady first mate, Mark Dalrymple of Norwich, have welcomed men and women anglers in pairs and on double dates as well as many families. “It’s a great day out on the water, whether or not you want to fish,” Dalyrmple said.
The Christie II is equipped with a Raymarine C-120 Multi-function display which features a color 12” screen for easy viewing of the radar, GPS, and fishfinder. She also sports a Garmin DGPS unit, a Sub-Troll 900 speed & temperature unit.
For gear, there’s a 5 Cannon downrigger, a Traxstech rod holder system, and a complete planer board system. Tackle includes one-piece light action Ugly Stick rods coupled with Okuma and Penn reels. Fishermen troll for muskies using a wide variety of lures, also all available on the boat, including Drifter Tackle, Bucher Depth Raiders, Grandma's Tackle, Hooker Crankbaits, Legend Tackle, MRG custom painted baits, and Musky Innovations soft plastics baits, just to name a few.
Plus, there are R&R, Dreamweaver, Northen King, Stinger, and Yeck spoons as well as R&R Salmon Assassins, Pro-Troll ProChips, and Dreamweaver Spin Doctors in all the hottest colors and sizes. Behind these top-producing flashers, customers can also choose flies from A-TOM-MIK and Fisher tackle.
Charters are being booked now, especially for prime weekends. Jared said his clientelle comes from all over New York state as well as New Jersey, Connecticut, Georgia and Tennessee.
Call Shade Tree Charters for rates and other information at 316-0331 or 843-6900. Or visit Captain Jared’s new website at www.shadetreecharters.com.
The Anchor Resort and Marina provides a choice of accommodations from a bed and breakfast, bunk house and cabins. There are several restaurants in Fair Haven.
Jared said 2007 proved to be the best fishing season on Lake Ontario since 1980. He has great expectations that this season will prove to be the same.
“My primary goal is to provide fishing memories that last a lifetime,” he said.
