Sherburne man fires at another before taking his own life

SHERBURNE – What appears to have been a domestic dispute led to a Sherburne man taking his own life with a firearm earlier this week.
A 25-year-old man was having a verbal argument with his 19-year-old girlfriend that eventually turned into a violent assault Tuesday, at approxmately 10 p.m., Sherburne Police Chief James A. Fox reported.
The chief, in a written statement, said an uninvolved female attempted to check on the welfare of both parties during the dispute and was nearly hit by a gunshot fired from inside the room.
The woman contacted the Sherburne Police Department and Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, which both responded to the scene.
When police arrived, they discovered the 19-year-old woman in the hallway showing signs of physical abuse. Police found the male subject’s body inside the apartment. The body had what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Fox said.
Chenango County Medical Examiner Dr. John Cruz’s examination of the body and the following police investigation both determined the death to have been a suicide.
“The assaulted female was transported to the Hamilton Hospital by the Sherburne Emergency Squad and was treated and released,” said Fox.
The names of all parties involved in the incident have been kept confidential by Sherburne police.
