Arrests made in UV noose incident
NEW BERLIN – Two 16-year-old Unadilla Valley High School students have been arrested in connection with the placing of a noose outside an African-American teacher’s door. The incident occurred Feb. 6 at the high school.
The two students, whose names were kept confidental because of their age, were arrested on charges of second degree harassment and disorderly conduct. The incident involved a homemade noose being hung from the door knob of the Liberty Partnership classroom where the only African American counselor in the high school, Mark Montgomery, works.
The arrests, as reported by Norwich State Police Investigator Jason Bessett, were a result of a joint investigation conducted by Unadilla Valley administration, the school resource officer, Chenango County Sheriff’s Department and the State Police in Norwich.
