SHERBURNE – With only 10 wrestlers participating, Sherburne-Earlville placed fifth in team scoring at the Section III, Class B meet last weekend, and Greg DuVall along with Chris Pike earned titles to highlight the Marauders’ performance.
DuVall won a 3-0 decision at 112 pounds over Dan Walts of V-V-S to improve to 36-4 on the season. Pike (285), meanwhile, remained unbeaten on the season pinning Mike Barker of Morrisville-Eaton in 51 seconds. Pike and Barker had met three times already this season, with the first three ending in one-point wins for Pike. “We sure thought that was going six minutes,” said S-E assistant coach Brian Hicks of Pike’s win.
Overall, six S-E grapplers earned bids to next week’s Division II sectionals at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. Alec Sheddon (103), Daniel Hicks (130), and Wheeler Brunschmid (171) all placed second, while Joe Knapp (140) was fourth.
“That’s a good finish for us being as young as we are,” Hicks said. Brunschmid is the lone S-E senior among the sectional tournament qualifiers.

Greene second at Class C sectionals
Greene improved its overall team score by 72 points over last season, and finished in second place behind Class C champion Lansing this past week.
The Trojans, coming off an unbeaten meet season, swept the diving led by Chris Osterwald’s school-record 442.25. Osterwald earned a return trip to the state meet, where he was a top-12 finisher a year ago.
Patrick Kelsey added a second in the 100 backstroke (1:00.01) and a third in the 100 freestyle (55.79). George Flanagan was second in the 100-yard breaststroke, (1:09.74) and third in the 200 individual medley (2:25.12). “We missed two days due to snow days, but we really responded well,” said Greene coach Mike Platta. “We have a tremendous amount of optimism going into next year.”
Osterwald competes in the state meet Feb. 28-March 1.
