Cook Park rates to increase again

GREENE – Seasonal camping rates at Chenango County’s Gaius Cook Memorial Park, located about five miles south of the Village of Greene, will go up again this summer despite a decrease in revenues last year.

Members of the Agriculture, Buildings & Grounds Committee agreed to a seasonal rate of $750. Day use rates remain the same at $3 per car. Assistant Superintendent of Buildings Grounds Brian Aiken said camping and day use of the park remained consistent.

There were 29 seasonal campers in 2004 at $600 and 20 in 2007 at $700. “We have lost season campers with the increase of the season rates,” Aiken said.

Taxpayers kick in about $20,000 per year to keep the park operational, according to the committee. “Looks like a law of diminishing returns to me,” Peter C. Flanagan, D-Preston, said.
