B-G, Greene advance

B-G 55, Odessa-Montour 44
BAINBRIDGE – B-G averted a quarterfinals upset bid by the lower-seeded Indians pulling away in the fourth quarter Saturday evening.
“This was a good game for us and a battle until about the final four minutes,” said B-G coach Bob Conway. “I thought our defense took over and Ellery Gager played extremely well in the defensive post. That allowed our forwards to get wider in our zone and our guards extended to put more pressure on the ball outside the lane.”
The result led to contested shots and two 30-second violations on the Indians, who were coming off a sectional win over Oxford earlier in the week.
Dani Conway had 23 points, 17 rebounds, and six assists for the Bobcats (18-2), and Mariah Schaeffer finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Gager plucked nine boards to go with her eight points.
B-G trailed 12-4 early, but finished the stanza on a 12-0 run, and extended that spurt to 18-2 over the early portion of the second quarter. “We had some nervous turnovers early, and it just took a while to settle down,” Conway said.
B-G plays Tioga Wednesday in the Class C semifinals at a neutral site.

Greene 53, Chenango Valley 44
FENTON – Greene avenged an early-season loss to Chenango Valley Saturday – and a loss to the Warriors in the Class B playoffs of 2007 – to reach the Section IV Class B semifinals.
Down by seven points in the first quarter, the Trojans (20-2) thoroughly dominated the middle two stanzas to create a seven-point lead entering the fourth. “It is pretty satisfying that we avenged our two losses on the other team’s home court,” said Greene coach Bill Case.
Megan McDermott and Liz Wentlent took turns in the second and third quarters leading the Trojans’ turnaround. McDermott had eight of her 11 points in the opening half, while Wentlent scored eight of Greene’s 16 third-quarter points on her way to a 12-point game.
Barb Borst led Greene and all scorers with 15 points. Lizzy Buhl dominated the interior posting a six-block, nine-rebound night. The Trojans, coming off a MAC championship, face No. 1 seed and 2008 STAC champion Seton Catholic Central Tuesday night at a neutral site. “Chenango Valley came out and really took it to us pretty good,” Case said. “But I was proud of our poise and how we didn’t panic. We had a really good second quarter and took that momentum into the second half.”

Downsville 69, Afton 50
DOWNSVILLE – Afton had few defensive answers for Downsville’s Stephanie Sheldon, who scored a game-high 33 points in a Class D playoff victory Saturday.
Teammates Allison Townsend and Jennifer Siefert had 16 and 12 points to aid the winners. “It was not a good night for us,” said Afton eighth-year coach John Simonds. “Sheldon played a good game, but I thought Townsend and Siefert were the key. They made the little 10-footers, and they seemed to make everything.”
Jessica Winans scored 22 points for Afton (14-8).

Newfield 41, Unadilla Valley 36
NEWFIELD – Unadilla Valley imposed its will and style of play on top-seeded Newfield, but came up five points short in the Class C playoffs Wednesday night.
Micki Volpini lifted the host team to a 15-point lead after three quarters scoring nine of her 21 points. “They’re a team that averages 65 points a game, so it was a good defensive effort for our team,” said UV coach Brandi Backus. “No one expected us to keep it close, but we worked our way back and were as close as four points in the fourth quarter.”
Katrina Benson had a double-double for the Storm scoring 13 points and grabbing a career-best 19 rebounds. Hannah Johnson scored five points in UV’s strong 14-5 fourth quarter.
UV led 10-0 off the bat, but were hurt by 4-for-35 shooting in the opening two quarters to give up the lead by halftime. “Neither team shot the ball well in the first half, and as bad as we were, I bet they were worse,” Backus said.
UV: Ross, 2 2-3-6; Benson, 5 3-5-13; Izard, 1 0-2-2; Johnson, 2 3-4-7; Hartwick, 0; Rudnitsky, 1 2-2-4; S. Talbot, 1 2-2-4. Totals: 14 12-18-36.
