Father and son charged in connection to $30,000 in thefts
NORWICH – Last week, a father and son appeared in Chenango County Court over allegations involving the theft and possession of nearly $30,000 worth of items allegedly taken from several burglarized residences.
Matthew M. Snyder, 21, Nurse Hollow Road, Afton is charged with six counts of burglary and one count of stolen property. He was remanded to the Chenango County jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
His father, Curtis F. Snyder, 52, Blakesly Nurse Hollow Road, is accused of being in possession of several stolen items and prosecutors also claim he stole over $3,000 worth of equipment and tools. Police accused Curtis of attempting to “impede” their attempts to recover the property. He was also incarcerated in the Chenango County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
Both men have pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The New York State Police, Chenango County Sheriff’s Department, Afton Police Department, and Canadian Pacific Railroad Police conducted an investigation into a large number of burglaries and larcenies reported over the last few years. The two men were arrested Jan. 22 in the Town of Afton.
Investigators say Matthew is responsible for several incidences beginning Sept. 25, 2007 in the Town of Afton. In that case, a $4,000 ATV was stolen from a garage.
In August of ‘07, police also claim Matthew allegedly stole over $24,000 in jewelry from a residence along with several other items before leaving the scene in the owner’s pick-up truck.
On Aug. 31, police accuse Matthew of breaking into a barn and taking over $1,200 in power equipment and tools.
On Nov. 14 in the Town of Bainbridge, he is accused of stealing several tools and assorted items costing over $40.
Then on Dec. 28 in the Town of Afton, he allegedly forced open a storage door and stole over $2,000 in tools and firearms.
Police are still asking citizens of the Afton area who have been the victim of a burglary or larceny, where their property was not recovered to date, to call the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Sidney at 561-7400. Anyone else who may have information is also asked to call. All calls will remain confidential.
