Sheriff's Dept. earns accreditation

NORWICH – The director of the New York State Sheriff’s Association was on hand Monday at the Chenango County Board of Supervisors’ monthly gathering to reward the county’s public safety sector with a certificate of accreditation.
The recognition is given to public safety agencies that meet and exceed the state’s standards of excellence and is an affirmation of the respect that the local agency enjoys across the state.
“Why do we bother with accreditation?” Peter R. Kehoe asked in his address to the board. “It is to approve the services offered by the Sheriff’s Office on behalf of the general public.” The Sheriff’s Association executive director said the award was “an outstanding achievement” for the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office and “not just an exercise in ego, but an exercise in good government.”
Kehoe congratulated the county’s supervisors and taxpayers for their support of the Public Safety Facility and staff of officers. The accreditation also serves to reduce the county’s cost for liability insurance coverage.
In other government news, the county board unanimously agreed with no discussion to the following: to decertify the Public Health Department’s home healthcare agency; to appropriate a state bonus for access to online food stamp applications; to establish a fund for emergency heating needs; to accept a $161,000 state grant to purchase 23 light duty transportation buses; to raise rates at Cook Park; to award Baillie Lumber of Smyrna a contract to harvest portions of county-owned forests and to oppose the pending closure of Camp Pharsalia.
A small handful of supervisors questioned the particulars of a resolution that appropriated $65,275 to reimburse snowmobile clubs that provide maintenance and improvements to Chenango County’s trails. The amount collected represents annual fees paid by clubs, and was near the same amount as last year, Wayne Outwater, R-Lincklaen, said. Outwater sponsored the resolution. Town of Norwich Supervisor David C. Law requested a report detailing how and to whom the funds are dispersed.
The board also approved real property tax corrections of errors made on individual parcels in the towns of Guilford, Smithville, Afton, New Berlin and Pitcher and on five parcels in Greene.
