Norwich firefighter looking to come home from hospital, but family still struggling with costs

NORWICH – For the last few months, a number of volunteers – many from the Norwich and Plymouth fire departments – have held several fundraising events for one of their own.
Volunteer firefighter Leroy Burlingame, 59, who has more than 36 years of service, was diagnosed with pancreatitis and hospitalized in late January at Wilson Hospital in Johnson City.
As a self-employed contractor with no medical insurance, he has been struggling with increasing health care costs.
Burlingame serves as the 2nd Assistant Chief at the Plymouth Fire Department and was still active at the time of his diagnosis. Previously, he was a volunteer with the Norwich Fire Department for 34 years.
A committee of friends and colleagues formed shortly after the news broke about Burlingame’s illness. There have been dinners, bottle and boot drives and auctions in an attempt to ease the financial burden on the family.
Currently the group is selling $5 raffle tickets. A drawing will take place April 15 with the winner receiving one of four prizes, a 12-gauge Partner Shotgun from Mayhood’s Sporting Goods, car detailing from Smith Ford, a one-night stay and two-dinner stay at the Howard Johnson Hotel in Norwich or a spa package at the Chi Chi’s Salon.
“Anyone interested in buying a ticket can ask almost any firefighter from either department or they can just contact us at our regular number. Leave a message and we will get back to you,” said Plymouth Fire Chief Matt Bates.
Burlingame has three children, all volunteer firefighters. His oldest, Brenda, 24, has been a volunteer at Norwich for the last 8 years. His son Leroy, 23, has been at the Plymouth station for 7 years along with his youngest, 16-year-old Travis.
“We are all just so very thankful of all the support received from both the Norwich and Plymouth fire departments along with all the other volunteers and all the people who have contributed. My dad is doing well and currently the hospital is looking for a nursing home in the area so he can continue his treatment closer to home. We just want to thank everyone,” said Leroy Burlingame III.
Mail-in donations are also accepted by sending a check addressed to the Leroy Fund, PO Box 631, Norwich, NY 13815,
If there are any questions regarding a donation, raffle or drop off, contact Bates at 334-6805 or Norwich Fire Department Volunteer Capt. Jim Fowlston at 226-1255.
