Village elections Tuesday
AFTON – Only one contest for political office takes place Tuesday, March 18 when voters have the opportunity to go to the polls in seven of the eight villages in Chenango County.
The Village of Oxford is one of very few municipalities in New York that holds its elections in June.
In Afton, Mayor Sally Muller, who throws her hat into the race for a second term, is being challenged by newcomer Solon “Stevie” Tsangaras of 22 Spring St. Tsangaras, 48, is self-employed and submitted the required petition signed by 50 residents. He was a write-in candidate for mayor in 2006.
Muller, 72, is a long-time resident of the village. She said the position of mayor “comes with fun and problems both.” If elected again, the East Main Street resident said she would welcome the long-awaited repairs made to 2006 flood-ravaged Spring Street as well as apply for a grant to build new sidewalks. She said the Federal Emergency Management Agency came through with the funding for the thoroughfare just last month.
Tsangaras, who is disabled, moved to Afton from Long Island in 2004. If elected mayor, he said he would work to entice a pharmacy to locate to the village and to find an alternative use for the area’s defunct race track.
“I have to drive twice a week all the way to Sidney to get my prescriptions,” he said. “There are a lot of retirees here who could use a pharmacy or pharmacy services of some sort.”
Candidates for office in the Village of Afton don’t run according to political party.
Also in Afton, incumbent Trustees Girard Mathews and Michele Simonds are running unopposed. Joseph C. Palulmbo is unopposed for village justice.
In Bainbridge, Mayor Phillip Darling is running unopposed. Ola Tranvagg and Linda Noble are both unopposed incumbent candidates for trustee.
Current Village of Greene Trustees Wayne Harley and Morris Eccleston are both running again, as is Judge Dante Acunto. All are unopposed.
There are two open trustee seats in the Village of Earlville. Running are incumbents William Excell and Mark Doeberl, both without opposition.
Incumbents Robert Starr and Wade Shrag run unopposed next week to retain their seats as Village of New Berlin trustees. The justice position is also on the ballot, but there are no candidates. Former Justice Mary Ann Ellis stepped recently away from the position. Unless a write-in is received prior to the election, the position will be left vacant until an appointment is made by Village Mayor Carol Riley.
There will be an election for the offices of trustee and justice in the Village of Sherburne. On the ballot are incumbents Ed LaCorte, Chris Tomaselli and Stephen Dushee for trustee. Tomaselli, who is running in his first election, was appointed trustee to fill the unexpired term left vacant last year when Kenneth R. VanWagner stepped away from the board. Incumbent Frank Faulkner runs unopposed for justice.
In the Village of Smyrna, incumbent Charlie Edmonds runs unopposed for his position as trustee.
Polls are open from noon until 9 p.m. at village offices.
