NHS presents spring concert
NORWICH – Under the guidance of Choir Director Mary Mayo and new Band Director Gretchen Shyne, Norwich High School students performed a first spring concert for the community Tuesday.
Starting promptly at 7 p.m. in the school’s auditorium, high school Principal Thomas Knapp spoke to the audience. Knapp said he had the chance to sneak in and watch the students prepare for the show throughout the past week. “The kids have done a wonderful job,” he said.
Getting the show underway, the Jazz Band took the stage to perform “Stolen Moments,” “Take Five.” “St. Thomas” and “Gone Fishin.” All included solo numbers intertwined with the pieces.
The Treble Choir chose to sing “Homeward Bound” and “The Silence and the Song.” Before each number, students spoke to the audience about why the choir had chosen to sing the particular tunes. “This song is about finding your place and going home again,” said high school student Samantha Turner. Megan Murphy spoke about how “The Silence and the Song” is about life’s journey and how lessons are learned that are not always easy. Accompanying the choir on piano was Hayley Chwazik-Gee.
