Gala planned; dancers lauded
NORWICH – The Amber Perkins School of the Arts invites the community to support its annual ‘Moonlight Gala’ on Friday, April 4 at the Howard Johnson Hotel ballroom, 75 N. Broad St., Norwich.
The festivities, beginning at 7 p.m., include dancing and a preview of dance students’ recital and competition performances. The fundraiser helps defray the costs of student participation in this year’s competitions.
Music is provided by Rock Star DJ Services of Norwich. Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments are available. For ticket information, contact the studios in Norwich by calling 336-6143 or in Vestal at 429-0087.
“The gala is an excellent way for the community to get to know our school and see and meet our dancers,” Perkins said.
Choreography created by Perkins was recently selected to be performed in May at the Choreofest concert New York City.
Principal dancers from the Wylliams Henry Danse Company of Kansas City, Missouri, will perform an adagio duet that Perkins created and later sold to the professional dance company. Only one piece of choreography per dance company participating in Choreofest was selected to be performed.
The duet, known as “Ritual,” featured Christina Jensen and Derek Stratton in concerts and competitions throughout the 2001 season. Perkins will be recognized at the concert along with multiple choreographers from across the country.
Though a small company, Perkins said the Wylliams Henry Danse Company “is extremely reputable” and helped launch the professional careers of such famous choreographers as David Parsons and Milton Myers.
In other Amber Perkins School of the Arts news, Stratton, a former award winning dancer and the studio’s principal teacher, was recently chosen as one of eight men from a group of 100 who auditioned to dance with Pilobolus Dance Theatre. Connecticut-based Pilobolus is an American dance company known internationally for creating man-made shapes with human bodies.
“This has been, of all the modern companies out there, my favorite company since the first time I saw them,” Stratton said. After rehearsals next month in Connecticut, the Norwich native will travel with the troupe to Bermuda for several performances scheduled in May.
Being asked to perform with Pilobolus hit him “like a ton of bricks,” Stratton said. “It was amazing.”
Pilobolus was the featured performer during the motion-picture industry’s Academy Awards presentations in 2007 and is currently seen in Hyundai Sante Fe car television commercials.
