Nail biz is American dream come true
NORWICH – Arriving in the United States 16 years ago, Quy (pronounced ‘We’) Le said opening her own business was a dream. That dream becomes reality today as she and her partner Kim Le put their ‘Open’ sign on and wait for their clients to arrive.
Quy and Kim – both Vietnam natives – said after working jobs where they felt over worked and under appreciated, they partnered to open a full-service nail salon next to B&D Pool and Spa on Rt. 12 South in the Town of Norwich.
“This is a dream come true,. It is like living the American dream,” said Quy. She and Kim, who has only lived in the U.S. for six years, have worked in various locations in Chenango and Broome counties while trying to save enough to buy a house.
As their savings account grew, the goal of being homeowners quickly turned into wanting to be business owners as well.
Now, less than a month after deciding to go for it, both women have put hours of love and labor into making the nail studio one of a kind for their clientele.
An Asian motif has been designed, the professional-grade equipment is set up and according to these two store owners, their family owned and operated business is ready to serve. From manicures to pedicures, acrylic nails, nail art, waxing and more, both store owners say their customers will be pleased with their level of products and care.
“We were drawn to the power of the people and the love in the community here,” said Quy, who resides in Bighamton. The duo of professional nail artists worked inside Wal-Mart’s nail boutique while saving money to open their own; meanwhile, they say the community made a lasting impression on them. “We could have opened something in Broome County, but we felt the love from the people here,” said Quy.
Kim said her family, who still resides in Vietnam, needs her support. She explained she tries to do what she can, and opening the business will not only benefit her life, but that of her family as well.
Raising their son, Colin, Quy and Kim say having the flexibility to spend time with him and the financial means to give him a good up-bringing are important aspects that played into the decision to open the business.
After opening their doors today at 10 a.m., Kim’s Nails will be open for business from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information on services and pricing, call 373-3441.
