Sherburne business to manufacture covered bridges
SHERBURNE – More than 48 people attended an open house celebration and helped to officially load a covered bridge Saturday in Sherburne.
Shawn and Kerry Kelly, owners of Kelly Paving, officially opened a new business, The Rainbow Bridge Company, last weekend, and many members of the community came out to show their support.
Shawn and Kerry unveiled their most recent bridge and asked those in attendance to help them load the bridge. Although an engineer had already examined the bridge and indicated that it could probably hold close to 18,000 pounds, Shawn and Kelly had the 48 people in attendance step on the scale and load onto the bridge. The bridge easily held the total weight of 9,757 pounds.
Shawn said the decision to make the covered bridges came after he and Kerry brainstormed ideas for a new business. “Ultimately, we decided to do this, and we both loved the idea,” Shawn said.
After being in the blacktopping business for 22 years, Shawn said the physical demand of the work, and the price of fuel, made him want to examine ideas for a new business. However, Shawn assured that he isn’t finished with the paving business yet. If the Rainbow Bridge Company becomes a full-time endeavor, Shawn said customers can get the same services from his brother’s business, Kelly Asphalt, in Norwich.
While the Kellys have not decided how much to charge for the bridge construction, they explained that each bridge will be custom built to each individual’s specifications. The cost will vary depending on the detail and materials for each.
When asked about the local market for covered bridges, Shawn explained while he hopes the company can serve individuals in the area, he hopes he will be able to supplement his business by supplying bridges to golf courses and building by building ramps and other products. “We’ll make handicap ramps that are timber framed, bridges for creeks, ponds. Whatever anybody comes up with,” Shawn said.
So far the community has seemed supportive of the Kelly’s new business venture. “Everybody’s talking about it,” Shawn said.
Kelly explained that she and Shawn haven’t set any real goals so far. “We just want to sell bridges,” she said.
The Rainbow Bridge Company is located on State Highway 12 in Sherburne. For more information contact Shawn and Kelly at 674-4894 or visit their web site at www.rainbowbridgeco.com.
