ES Review: ‘My Fair Lady’

NORWICH - Whether it’s gardens, top hats and tiaras you are after or tales of sin, too much gin, and debauchery, the Norwich High School cast and crew of “My Fair Lady” delivers it all.

After a sneak peek during dress rehearsal last night, the correct word to describe the performance would be: Professional. Audiences this weekend are in for a charming evening of acting, singing and humor backed by a pit orchestra playing some of Broadway’s most resounding tunes - and amazing scenery that gets better with every set.

Is this really a small town in central New York with so little to offer?

Hardly.

Leading man, sophomore Chris Kappel, senior Ariel Bendixen and Kappel’s sidekick, played by senior Matt Austin, balance the show beautifully with song, soliloquy and rapport that goes beyond their ages. All three said it was difficult to portray the relationship between the sexes as written by George Bernard Shaw back in 1913. After all, how could a woman fall in love with a man who not only treats her like she’s from the gutter, but insists that a woman should be more like a man? It is confusing.
