City hopes to auction police car

NORWICH – A City of Norwich police car, which currently has over 96,000 miles on it, may soon be auctioned off to provide revenue for additional police equipment.
At April’s meeting of the City of Norwich Finance / Personnel Committee, Police and Fire Chief Joseph Angelino told the committee he would like the patrol car, which currently has 96,352 miles, to be declared surplus property so the department could sell the vehicle on the Internet auction site E-Bay.
In January, the city approved the purchase of a new patrol car. Often, Angelino explained, the department would retire the vehicle by transferring it to another city department, but he said in this instance, the city has no other uses for it.
“Currently, [the car] is running for about three days before it has to go to the highway garage for repairs,” Angelino told the committee.
The police department has sold vehicles on E-Bay before. Angelino said the city generally received between $3,000 and $5,100.
Additionally, Angelino asked that the funds gained from the sale of the vehicle be earmarked for the purchase of police equipment.
“We have items that need to be replaced, and I’d hate to have to use other funds to do that,” Angelino said.
Switching to the fire department, Angelino asked the committee to reject the bids that had recently been received for a new ambulance. Three companies picked up the bids, and two returned them, but due to the wording in the bid requests, there was a great disparity in the cost and stipulations of the bids returned. If the vehicle is ordered to the city’s specifications, it could take nine to ten months to build. The city is requesting bids for both new and demo model ambulances. A new ambulance generally costs approximately $130,000. A demo model with $8,000 miles or less generally runs between $112,000 to $120,000. The committee unanimously passed a motion rejecting the original bids, and made a motion for the department to re-bid for the needed ambulance under the guidance of city Finance Director William Roberts.
