Hooper earns Anna Suplee Nursing Scholarship
NORWICH – Wednesday members of the Chenango County Senior Citizens Council visited SUNY Morrisville Norwich Extension to present a student with the Anna Suplee Memorial Nursing Scholarship.
This year’s scholarship went to Otselic Valley graduate Nicole Hooper. Hooper, who now lives in Norwich with her three year old son, is a second year student in the nursing program and has has achieved the Dean’s List for four semesters.
Chenango County Senior Citizens Council President Fred McGarity explained the scholarship is given in memory of Senior Citizens Council Founder Anna Suplee. “Anna Suplee was a retired nurse, an advocate for senior citizens and served as president of the council for many years. This scholarship is in honor of her years of dedicated service to her patients and senior citizens of Chenango County,” McGarity said. The council advocates for and strives to enhance the quality of life for Chenango County’s seniors.
For almost 10 years, the scholarship has been given to a second-year nursing student based on academic achievement and financial need. ‘I’m very pleased the council continues to support our students here,” said Peg Golden, associate dean of nursing.
Hooper has accepted a position with Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown beginning in June. She plans to further her nursing education by taking part in a Hartwick College program through Bassett. She will begin working toward her bachelor’s degree in the fall.
“I’m very pleased that Nicole was recognized in this way. I’m happy to work with Peg (Golden) and the nursing facility to offer this program here. It’s a great quality program,” said Dean Ted Nichols.
Hooper was happy to receive the award as proof of her hard work and dedication over the last two years. As a single mother, Hooper has been supporting herself and her child while working her way through college.
