State budget calls for troopers to stay in local schools

CHENANGO COUNTY – New York’s school districts will now keep the School Resource Officers program.
As part of his New York state budget, former Governor Eliot Spitzer planned to remove troopers from rural schools and re-locate them into more populated districts in the state. Governor David Paterson reinstated the budget item last week.
Locally, Greene, Oxford, Sherburne, Otselic Valley and Unadilla Valley school districts benefit from the program.
“We are pleased. We see the advantages everyday,” said Oxford Superintendent Randy Squier. “It is a really nice resource for us. It is beneficial for not only the students, but for the staff as well.” Oxford’s SRO is shared with the Sherburne school district.
“We are happy the piece of legislation was put back into the budget,” said Squier.
In Greene, Superintendent Gary Smith said the SRO program is an essential part of the school’s programming.
“This is important to the school and our effort to help students be as successful as they can,” he said.
