Norwich sweeps pair
NORWICH – Norwich’s two long jumpers, Jesse Prosser for the boys and Katie Benenati for the girls, were in peak form with personal-bests in the Tornado’s sweep of Johnson City Tuesday.
Prosser culminated a three-win day winning the long jump with a 22-foot, 1/4-inch leap. It was the best jump for a Tornado track athlete in over 35 years, said co-head coach Phil Curley, whose boys won comfortably, 85-54.
Benenati, meanwhile, had a personal-best 16-feet, 11 1/2 inches to win her event. She is just a few inches off the school record, and it ended her four-win day.Prosser, too, had three individual wins. “You really do not expect to have those types of jumps that we had the first meet of the season,” Curley said. “We were pretty happy.”
Benenati set a personal-best in the 100 meters timing a 13.0, and she anchored the winning 400-meter relay that included Cleo Daoud, Sarah Bonnell, and Elisha Eddy that matched last year’s best time of 52.6. Norwich’s girls rolled to an 82-58 win. “Those four were all-division last year (in STAC) when there were three freshmen and one eighth-grader (Daoud),” Curley noted.
The Tornado boys had a pair of individual wins from Mike Reilly, who took the 400-meter hurdles and triple jump.
Brittany Barnes padded the NHS girls’ lead with victories in the shot put and triple jump.
