One Rite Aid closes

NORWICH – More than ten months after the sale of the Eckerd chain of drug stores to the Rite Aid Corporation, one of the two Rite Aids located on North Broad Street in Norwich has closed.
The original Rite Aid, located at 90 North Broad St. in Norwich, held its last day of business on Wednesday, April 9. The store manager explained that today the employees will be packing up the inventory and transitioning it to the second Rite Aid location – the former Eckerd Pharmacy – at 82 North Broad.
Rite Aid purchased the Eckerd chain in June of 2007, and at the time, public relations officials verified that fewer than 200 store locations would close as a result of the sale, but they explained that the proximity of the stores would have an effect on which stores would be closing.
Since June, the two Rite Aid stores have been operating directly across the street from one another. In an earlier interview, public relations representative Jody Cook had explained that while a potential closure would affect many local customers and employees, all prescriptions would be automatically transferred to the other store and all of the store associates would be offered jobs at the other location. That information has not been verified since the store announced its closure.
