City to tear down another blighted property
NORWICH – A special meeting of the City of Norwich Common Council was held at 7 Thursday morning, and among items on the agenda, was the acquisition of another blighted city property.
In recent months, the city has been working to rid Norwich of some of the eye sores that have plagued the city for years, and on Thursday, they added one more property to the list. The home, located at 49 Front Street, has been condemned for a number of years.
On Thursday, the council authorized the city to purchase the property in exchange for the remission of property taxes owed on the property, in the amount of $1,748.53.
Mayor Joseph Maiurano explained the property would most likely be in the city’s possession by Tuesday. Community development funds will be used to demolish the home. No definite plans have been made after that. Maiurano explained the lot may be sold so the city is able to recoup its expenses, or he may look at other options.
Earlier in the year, the city obtained a grant to demolish three other blighted properties and build new homes in their place. The Restore New York Grant provided the city with $300,000 of funding for the destruction of condemned properties and for building new homes in their place. Blighted properties located at 52 Fair St., 7 Waite St. and 23 Grove Ave. were included in the grant application. The city will begin demolition in the near future. A house located on Canasawacta Street will be moved to the Fair Street site. The other two sites will see new stick built or modular homes built.
In an earlier interview, Maiurano said he hopes to sell the homes to first time home buyers and use the money acquired from the sale to demolish additional problem properties, including some that were identified prior to applying for the grant.
