S-E sixth graders show life in ancient Greece

SHERBURNE – After completing a history unit on ancient Greece, the sixth grade class at Sherburne-Earlivlle Middle School donned their togas and held a Greek Festival Tuesday night to show the community what they had learned.

“The sixth graders study ancient Greece for about a month,” said teacher Jonathan Burke. “At the end of the unit, we hold an Agora marketplace, and the students have to market a topic of their choice.” Burke explained that the topic could be anything they had learned about, including ancient Greek food, medicine, soldier’s recruiting, Plato’s Academy, or an array of other topics.

The students performed presentations before the event, including Power-Point presentations or videos. For example, one student who was marketing Greek food made a cooking show-type video to show what they had learned. Another group focused on the Olympic Games, and created an ESPN broadcast using historical information.
