BID, Friends of the Park present second ‘Gatsby’ fundraiser

NORWICH – Plans are underway for the Norwich Business Improvement District and the Friends of the Park’s second annual gala event in Norwich’s downtown parks.
The ‘Great Gatsby’-style event will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday, May 30 in East Park. Similar to last year’s event, the fundraiser will serve a dual purpose. It will benefit the restoration of East and West Parks, a plan that would bring the look of the parks closer to what it looked like during the Gatsby period. The event will also serve as the annual BID dinner.
BID Executive Director Pegi LoPresti explained that last year’s event was a success for everyone involved. “It cleared up a lot of misinformation about the parks project, and it brought a lot of people together for a good time. This year, we’re hoping it’s even bigger and better,” LoPresti said. In order to make that possible, a bigger tent will be utilized this year in order to hold more tables. A separate tent will be set up for the bar area, and cocktail tables will be set up in that area.
Last year, approximately 125 people attended the event, and this year LoPresti is hoping to get at least 175.
The event features a gourmet menu of food, drinks, including beer or wine, music by First Class Band and dancing. Also included in the evening, Eric Larsen from the Friends of the Park group will provide those in attendance with a short presentation about the parks restoration plan, and the BID will present its “Commitment to Community” award to Pete Kwasnick at Service Pharmacy.
Those who attend the event will be invited to park at NBT Bank, where they will be chauffeured to East Park in period style cars. Gatsby style dress is encouraged, but not required.
“Whenever we can hold an event in the center of our BID district, it’s a good thing. To tie it in with this event for the Friends of the Park and our annual dinner, serves for both organizations. “This is a fun and different venue for people to go to,” LoPresti said.
The Gatsby Gala Event will be catered by the Canasawacta Country Club. In order to get a good idea of how many people will be attending the event, guests must RSVP by calling the BID office at 336-1811 no later than Monday, May 19. The event will cost $65 each for BID members and $75 for non-members.
“We encourage people who came last year to come back, and for those who didn’t get to come last year, this is your opportunity,” LoPresti said.
Following the event, on Sunday, May 31, the BID has agreed to allow Dollars for Scholars to utilize the tent, which will still be set up in East Park for their awards ceremony. The BID said last year that they hoped to find an organization that would be able to utilize the tent while it was set up in the park.
