Bricks & Mortar Report
EDITOR’S NOTE: The Bricks & Mortar Report provides updates on major construction projects in Chenango County.
Chenango County Fire Department Tower Project:
• Microwave dishes have been installed on most of the new towers in Otselic, Pharsalia and Coventry. Transmitting antennas and cables are set to go up next with the project’s deadline now set for July, officials say.
Dunkin’ Donuts:
• The Dunkin Donuts restaurant underway on state Rt. 12 South in the Town of Norwich is scheduled to be completed in late July, said project manager Terry Summers of the Syracuse contracting firm, Rich and Gardner.
• Construction crews began work at the site April 7. The concrete slab has been poured, framing is near complete and workers anticipate placing the roof on the structure this week.
• More site work is schedule for next week, followed by interior rough-ins.
Halfway House Bridge (County Route 32B):
• The bridge is ahead of schedule and could be open for motorists in late July or early August, Chenango County Highway Director Randy Gibbon said.
• Contractors and engineers working on the county and state project planned to meet Tuesday for a meeting prior to pouring the deck’s foundation. Weather permitting, the concrete deck could be poured as early as Wednesday.
• Approaches at either end of the new span over the Chenango River were addressed last week, with workers bringing both sides up to grade and creating a turning lane on state Rt. 12.
Norwich City School District building project:
• The project saw a minor set-back last week due to longer than anticipated curing times for concrete which, in turn, backed up the flooring process. The administration had targeted May 18 to move equipment and staff into the new addition. Superintendent Gerard O’Sullivan anticipates a new move-in date for June 1.
• All materials and contractors are on site.
• Workers have been framing ceilings and painting in various new classrooms. Tile and bathroom fixtures are being installed in the bathrooms.
• A concrete entrance archway was erected next to the middle school.
• O’Sullivan said no work in the gymnasium will begin until after seniors graduate in case inclement weather forces the ceremonies indoors.
• The high school’s entrance area, nurses’ office and administration offices are set to be demolished directly after students leave for the summer.
• Workers are scheduled to complete the second half of the building projects at both Perry Browne and Stanford Gibson primary schools over the summer.
• All work has a Sept. 1 completion goal.
