Woman sentenced for carrying drugs in car
NORWICH – Stephanie Manwarren, Norwich, pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth degree, a class D felony Friday.
She received five years of probation and was ordered to pay fees including a $250 surcharge, $20 for crime assistance, and $50 for a DNA sample. Manwarren’s driving permit was also suspended, and she was assigned to complete drug treatment court.
Following sentencing, Supreme Court Justice Kevin M. Dowd made it clear that if Manwarren commits any kind of felony within the next 10 years, she would face jail time.
The woman and her husband, Shane Manwarren, were indicted on felony drug-related charges last December following an incident where the couple was pulled over and found to be in possession of more than $6,400 worth of drugs.
After searching the couple’s vehicle, police reportedly found marijuana and pills in the false bottom of a Red Bull can that the Sheriff’s Office said had been specifically altered to prevent its detection from law enforcement. Police also seized four ounces of powdered cocaine from the vehicle.
The Manwarrens were officially charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third and fifth degree (B and D felonies). The couple was also charged with a class A misdemeanor, fifth degree criminal possession of marijuana.
Following a search and seizure of the vehicle, a search warrant was obtained for the couple’s residence in the Town of Columbus where additional marijuana and packaging materials were found.
