May proclaimed older Americans month locally
NORWICH – Local government leaders recognized Chenango County’s 10,000 senior citizens on Monday - as well as two specific volunteers - by proclaiming May “Older Americans Month.”
The celebration of adults aged 60 and over was begun at the national level in 1963. It was celebrated in Albany last week where seniors who have volunteered to help individuals remain at home or in the community of their choice received appreciation certificates.
At an event entitled, “New York at Home: Independent Living for Older New Yorkers,” Robert H. Gardner of Norwich was recognized for his service. Gardner has volunteered for the Chenango County Area Agency on Aging since 1994. He drives about 15 miles each week day to deliver meals to about 15 to 20 homebound seniors, often helping to pack and organize the meals for many others.
Priscilla DeNyse of Bainbridge was also honored in Albany and by county supervisors yesterday. After working for 15 years as a licensed practical nurse, she volunteered with Hospice of Chenango County. DeNyse works with patients and families, helps at fundraising events and assists with clerical duties in the office. Her latest adventure was to participate in a United Methodist Mission to the Gulfport, Miss. area in February where she helped rebuild a home damaged by Hurricane Katrina.
“Thanks to you both for doing all that you do for others,” AAA Director Debra Sanderson said.
Clerk of the Board RC Woodford said Chenango County’s seniors represent 20 percent of the county’s population.
“There are numerous senior citizens who volunteer their time and talents through programs to assist business, schools, non-profit organizations and governmental agencies throughout our county. ... Take time to recognize the seniors for our communities, and the contributions they have made, and continue to make, to improving the quality of life enjoyed in our county,” the resolution stated.
