Five county districts applauded for ‘high performing’ schools
CHENANGO COUNTY – Five school districts in Chenango County had “High Performing/Gap Closing” schools based on criteria under the No Child Left Behind Act, the state Education Department announced last week.
Greene, the only county district with all its schools included on the list – intermediate, middle and high – was recognized for meeting all applicable state standards for English Language Arts and math during the 2006-07 school year, and making “Adequate Yearly Progress” in those subjects for two consecutive years.
“This recognition is a testimony to the hard work and dedication of the Greene Central School students, parents, Board of Education and all members of the educational staff,” a prepared statement from a release stated.
Sherburne-Earlville elementary and high schools were also named as “High Performing/Gap Closing,” along with Afton Elementary School, Bainbridge-Guilford High School and Oxford Middle School.
For 2006-2007 school year results, the number of “high performing/gap closing” schools increased by more than 100 compared to the previous school year, according to the education department, despite an increase in state standards.
“It is encouraging that half of New York’s eligible schools have shown the kind of progress needed for them to be recognized today,” education Commissioner Richard Mills said. “The Regents will continue to take aggressive action to ensure that every student in every school has a chance to succeed.”
Only schools and districts that had a minimum of 30 continuously enrolled students in at least three accountability groups – the “all student,” the five racial/ethnic groups, the low-income group, the limited English proficient group and the students with disabilities group – were eligible for recognition as either “high performing/gap closing” or “rapidly improving,” according to the department. Statewide, there were 3,551 public and charter schools and 678 districts that met the eligibility requirement.
