Norwich classic car collector announces June auction

NORWICH – Norwich resident and businessman Ray Hart announced this week he’s selling his expansive collection of classic cars and military vehicles at auction in June.
Evans Auction Service will conduct the sale at 10 a.m. on June 14 at the Chenango County Fairgrounds located on East Main Street in Norwich. There are 46 vehicles in the collection, including 20 antiques and 10 military.
“This impressive collection features pre-war vehicles through the 1980s,” said auctioneer Bill Evans, “Including Model A’s, a ‘14 Model T, a ‘29 Peerless, a ‘49 Plymouth Woody, other Chevys, Chryslers, Plymouths, a DeSoto, a Packard, a Pontiac, a metropolitan and a rare 1982 Checker Taxi – their last year of production.”
“We are excited about the opportunity to help Ray fine new homes for this great collection,” Evans added. “It’s going to be quite an event for the community.”
Prior to the auction, there will be an open house at the fairgrounds from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 12 and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, June 13.
The event is being marketed nationwide, Evans said, and inquiries have already been coming in from as far away as Detroit.
Evans Auction Service, a fifth generation firm, has been assisting individuals and local businesses in liquidating estates and business assets since 1916, a press release states. To view more, visit the auctioneers’ Web site at www.evansauctionservice.com.
Hart began collecting classic cars in the 1950s with the purchase of a red, 1931 Model A Ford pick-up truck from a cabinet maker in New Hampshire. He says his fondness for antiques began as a boy playing in what was once Sawyer’s Junkyard, located near where his grew up on Pleasant Street in Norwich.
“That’s where I think I got my interest,” the collector said.
When asked what his wife Laura’s favorite vehicle in the collection was, the long-time owner of Hart’s Electric in Norwich said it was the 1930 Ford Roadster. His is the five-ton army wrecker.
Once the cars are gone, Hart said he plans to let his grandchildren use the extra space in the storage barn as a racetrack for his collection of motor-scooters.
