Guilford names Citizen of the Year

GUILFORD – On Memorial Day the Guilford Historical Society awarded the Guilford Citizen of the year 2008 to David Thomas Hubbard, presented by Mary Ellen Parsons. The Honorable Cliff Crouch also presented David the New York State Assembly Citation. David’s contributions to the community of Guilford are many.

Born on Aug. 29, 1942, he is the son of Laura and Archibald Hubbard. David grew up in Guilford and attended Guilford Central School. At the age of 16 he joined the Guilford Fire Department and is still an active member – almost 50 years later. He has served in many capacities including Fire Chief, member of the Emergency Squad and is now a Fire Commissioner. He has been praised and thanked by the many people he has helped throughout the years.

Hubbard is also a veteran, drafted into the Army serving in Vietnam as an airplane mechanic. After the war in 1967 he married Shirley Borthwick. They are known as the Velcro couple - always together helping others. They have three children – Shirley Marie who lives in California with her husband Christopher and their three children Katherine, Jessica and Joshua. Their son Trent lives in Alaska and is working as a Geologist for the State and Teresa a special needs daughter who lives in Oxford.
